As many of us around the world now know, Donald Trump and Joe Biden are head to head in the fight for the White House. The US election polls have officially closed and both men have confidently said that they will come out victorious. We have to wonder though, what do political parties in South Africa like the African National Congress (ANC) think about the race?

ANC ON TRUMP/BIDEN US ELECTIONS

National Chairperson of the ANC Gwede Mantashe addressed the media on Tuesday regarding various issues but one topic he could not avoid was that of the US elections. When asked where the ANC stands regarding the elections between Trump and Biden, Mantahse was very careful not to pick a side.

“The ANC takes its time to issue statements because one of the issues we have learnt to respect is the sovereignty of other countries and do an analysis of what is the outcome,” he said.

“Let’s say for example we condemn a particular candidate and that candidate wins the elections, we are the governing party in South Africa who will be forced to work with that party that wins the elections,” he added.

Mantashe said that’s why it’s always important for us [ANC] not to put the cart before the horse as a governing party.

WHAT ABOUT THE EFF AND THE DA?

Well, when The South African (TSA) contacted Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) spokesperson Vuyani Pambo, he was willing to hear the question but did not provide an answer. When and if an answer is received, we’ll be sure to update you.

As for the Democratic Alliance (DA), National Spokesperson Solly Malatsi said John Steenhuisen would most likely comment once the official results of the US election are declared but this cannot be confirmed.

BIDEN AND TRUMP ADDRESS SUPPORTERS

Early on Wednesday morning, both Biden and Trump addressed their supporters. While Biden said he feels they are on track to win the election, Trump said certain people are trying to steal the election.

“I will be making a statement tonight. A big WIN! We are up BIG, but they are trying to steal the election. We will never let them do it. Votes cannot be cast after the Polls are closed!” said Trump.

“It’s not my place or Donald Trump’s place to declare the winner of this election. It’s the voters’ place. We feel good about where we are. We believe we are on track to win this election,” said Biden.
