Police said they are investigating a shooting that took place outside a popular seafood restaurant in White River. Here is the latest.

The shooting that took place outside a popular seafood restaurant in White River is being investigated by police.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the shooting happened on Saturday evening.

“Police in White River heard a gunshot sound around 19:00 near the police station. They then went to investigate, where they found a group of people on the road and a lifeless body of a man lying down.”

Mohlala said police discovered that he was shot in the chest and hand by a 39-year-old man who was also on the scene.
“It is said that the victim allegedly asked for a pizza from the suspect, who refused to give him. Then the victim assaulted the suspect with a chain. It is further alleged that the suspect drew his firearm and shot him. The victim is estimated to be in his late 40s.”

He furthermore said medical personnel was summoned to the scene, but unfortunately, he was certified dead.
“The suspect was arrested and charged with murder. The firearm, as well as his firearm licence were confiscated for further investigation. He is expected to appear in White River Magistrate’s Court today, 27 March 2023.”
Police urge anyone with information that can assist in tracing the family of the deceased to please call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP.
The owner of the popular seafood restaurant Ocean Basket, Andre Spyridis, said the shooting happened OUTSIDE the restaurant and not as reported previously by paramedics that the shooting occurred INSIDE the restaurant.
According to Grace Harding, CEO of Ocean Basket and spokesperson for The Restaurant Collective, two patrons were dining in the outside area of the restaurant when the shooting happened.
She said the patrons were ok and left safely.
