Two University of Pretoria hostels have been slammed for their racist behaviour after failing to meet basic transformation requirements. These UP hostels remain basically all-white.
Two student residences (hostels) for the University of Pretoria (UP) have been hit hard for failing to transform from essentially “all-white” residences. One of them, Sonop, has been banned from taking part in any of the university’s traditional competitions.
The privately owned residence is described on the university’s official site as “one of the University’s most respected residences with an impressive tradition of nearly a hundred years.”
It seems that tradition is to not feature black people…
“A full-time Head of Residence, together with the House Committee manage the residence to ensure affordable and non-discriminatory accommodation to all 160 residents, with Christian values, an outstanding academic culture and a participatory and enjoyable life orientation.” – Sonop description on UP website
The prohibition against Sonop came from university management and the Student Representative Council (SRC). While only six out of 160 Sonop residents were black, University spokesperson Rikus Delport told IOL that private residences struggle to hit the transformation targets.
“The university is sympathetic to the challenges facing Sonop in this regard, particularly given the high cost of operating student housing without any form of subsidisation,” he said.
As management looked to reach a new understanding with SONOP, SRC president Kwena Moloto revealed that majority white private residences were also banned from participating last year.
“To my knowledge, a third of the residence should house black people, in accordance with the quota,” Moloto said.
The DA-led SRC has unsurprisingly been called out by AfriForum lawyer Willie Spies, whose son is now in Sonop. Spies took to Twitter so seemingly imply that he had no problem with a university residence being “too white and Afrikaans”.
“After the DA-dominated student council and university management insisted that Sonop be kicked out of all hostel competitions, including the first-year serry contest InSync, because Sonop is too white and too Afrikaans, the Sonop first years today kept their sarcasm for everyone interested in the West lawn.”
“Whites and Christians only” De Goede Hoop hostel has also been in all kinds of trouble since the end of last year. Community activist Yusuf Abramjee called for a probe into how a residence exclusively for white Christian Afrikaners could be allowed.
The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities ruled that admission should be representative of all demographics n society.
