The University of the Free State has endured another attack at the hands of gunmen last Sunday 26 September. Three armed men raided a rented student accommodation spot in Phuthaditjhaba but the mission went awry.

BRAVE: UNIVERSITY OF FREE STATE STUDENT FIGHTS BACK

The latest attack follows a week after two University of the Free State students were shot dead in Botjhabela – but Sunday’s attack left attackers injured rather than any student.

According to the District Commissioner of the Mangaung Metro Policing, Major-General Arthur Adam, a student that was facing armed attackers somehow fought back to disarm one of them, before shooting two of the suspects, while one attacker managed to find an escape.

“He overpowered this suspect, disarmed him, and managed to shoot and wound him and his accomplice. In the process, one got away…” Adams said.

LAST WEEK’S BLOODY ATTACK

As TheSouth African reported last week, two University of the Free State students sadly died in an armed attack. The two deceased students suffered gunshot wounds, while two others were left critically injured.

According to police, balaclava-wearing suspects attacked the students at their place of residence and demanded their cellphones, laptops, and cash.

Sadly, the suspects could not avoid shooting, as two students died, while another two were left fighting for their lives in hospital.

“On 22 September 2021, at about 00:40, a group of young men residing at Botjhabela Village near Phuthaditjhaba were allegedly attacked and shot by unknown suspects who were wearing masks, demanded cash, laptops, and cellphones from them,” Police said.

“It is alleged that police were summoned to a shooting incident at about 01:00 at Botjhabela Village.

“Upon their arrival, they found a group of students believed to be studying at University of Free State at Qwaqwa Branch.

“The police found two male bodies on the scene with fatal gunshot wounds. They were identified by their friends. Two other males were already rushed to Mofumahadi Manapo Regional hospital where they are in critical condition.”
