Unisa VC slams claims she used university fees to buy fridge, bed

Unisa VC Puleng Lenkabula has slammed claims that she purchased a fridge for R400k and an imported bed for R300k.

University of South Africa (Unisa) Vice-Chancellor Puleng Lenkabula slammed allegations that she used university fees to purchase personal items.

Unisa’s Lenkabula was in the spotlight in 2021 for home renovations

Last year, Lenkabula made headlines due to the cost of renovations at her official residence. A number of allegations were made against the Unisa VC, including maladministration and irregular expenditure.

For a number of months, Unisa nip bad publicity in the bud as there were several reports of irregular appointments and expenditure. EWN reports that the learning institution’s management was also accused of almost collapsing Unisa.

Unisa VC accused of spending R400 000 on a fridge

Unisa’s Vice-Chancellor is accused of racking up a massive R2 million bill for renovations at the Cloghereen residence. Some of the work done includes kitchen upgrades, floors, plumbing and walls.

Claims that Lenkabula spent a whopping R400 000 on a fridge and R300 000 on an imported bed have also been doing the rounds.

Lenkabula rubbishes allegations against her

Unisa’s principal slammed the claims that she believes were made in a bid to discredit her.

“Why don’t you follow the fact that I said the vice-chancellor was holding accountable the departments that put quotations that were beyond what is normative, instead of casting of casting the vice-chancellor as a slay queen who wants to steal from the resources of society,” said Lenkabula.

Meanwhile, it was reported that we could think of a million things that a medical facility needs before it bulk-purchases skinny jeans. But here we are. Gauteng‘s Tembisa Hospital CEO Ashley Mthunzi has come under fresh scrutiny after a new investigation revealed more bizarre spending habits.

As well as forking out for luxury armchairs and overpriced hand towels, the Gauteng hospital also decided that 200 pairs of skinny jeans made for a necessary purchase. In total, 200 items were purchased by the facility – amounting to R2 500 each.

There’s something dreadfully wrong with this transaction. First and foremost, any purchase of R500 000 or over must go through a tender process. Anything under can be signed off directly.
