KZN traffic officer who demanded R10 000 ‘cool drink’ sentenced

The Greytown Regional Court in KwaZulu-Natal has convicted and sentenced Dumisani Mchunu who was a traffic officer at Umvoti Municipality who demanded R10 000 gratification.

Mchunu demanded R10 000 gratification after he claimed that the licence disc of the complainant’s vehicle was fraudulent. He was sentenced on Tuesday, 28 June.

TRAFFIC OFFICER SENTENCED 

According to police, the complainant reported the matter to the Hawks members from Durban Serious Corruption Investigation and an undercover operation was conducted on 3 March 2022. 

The officer was then arrested at his place of employment and charged for corruption.

“He appeared in court several times until he was convicted and sentenced. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment of which half of the sentence will be served under correctional supervision.”

COP ARRESTED FOR LYING ABOUT HIS GUN

A 46-year-old traffic cop from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) was recently arrested for allegedly lying about losing his firearm. The man had claimed he was attacked by three men who made off with the weapon, when he had in fact lost it.

According to police, when the alleged theft of the firearm was investigated, there were some holes in the traffic officer’s story. When he was called in for more questioning in relation to the matter, it was when authorities he may have lied about what happened to the weapon.

“The docket was allocated to an investigating officer who investigated the matter further. During the investigation it was established that there were contradictions in the man’s statement.

“The complainant was re-interviewed and it was discovered that he had reported a false case. He was informed that making a false statement is a criminal offence. It was established by the investigating officer that he had lost his firearm and did not report the matter to his employer.”
