They are Anonymous, they are legion, expect them. That’s the slogan of the global hacking group. And as Russian forces continue to invade Ukraine, Anonymous has declared war against Russian President Vladimir Putin. The hacking group says it is doing all it can to come to the defence of Ukrainians AND help Russian civilians receive more than just censored information.

Anonymous joins the fight against Putin

The group took to Twitter on Saturday to reveal that it is working hard to keep Russian government websites shut down.

“Anonymous has ongoing operations to keep .ru government websites offline, and to push information to the Russian people so they can be free of Putin’s state censorship machine. We also have ongoing operations to keep the Ukrainian people online as best we can.”

Both Ukraine and Russia continue to release harrowing figures of the number of soldiers killed and vehicles destroyed. As Russian forces continue to push into Kyiv to hunt down Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, the world continues to get more and more on edge.

Russian censorship

Anonymous and internet advocacy group NetBlocks have also confirmed that the Russian government is now restricting Twitter on multiple network providers. With the Russian TV news channel RussiaToday known for spreading state propaganda, many Russian citizens against the war have now been left without information.

The Ukrainian military says it has killed over 3 500 invading Russian soldiers and destroyed 102 Russian tanks. Eight helicopters and over 500 armoured vehicles have also allegedly been shot down by Ukraine.

South Africa is also being hit hard by the conflict. The Department of Mineral Resources has announced that the price of petrol will increase AGAIN next month. This time by over R1.46.
