The UIF paid out R1 billion to workers in December 2022
The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) paid R1 Billion in benefits to beneficiaries in December 2022.

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) said it has processed and paid out over R1 billion in benefits to beneficiaries countrywide in December 2022.
UIF PAID OUT R1 BILLION TO BENEFICIARIES
The Department of Labour said this amount was paid to 225 646 beneficiaries.

The R1 billion benefit pay-out was as follows:
- Unemployment benefits – R876 million
- Maternity and Parental benefits – R88 million
- Dependents Benefits – R32 million
- Illness Benefits – R24 million

UIF HAPPY THEY PAID CLIENTS
The Department of Labour said since the inception of the special Covid-19 Temporary Employer-Employee Relief Scheme (Covid-19 Ters) in March 2020 during the first lockdown, the Fund has disbursed R62 billion to at least 5 million workers to date.
The UIF has also paid R21 million to 6404 workers who lost income due to the July 2021 unrest.
The temporary financial relief scheme was established to assist these workers.

UIF Commissioner Teboho Maruping says the Fund remains committed to providing social security to UIF contributors and their beneficiaries in line with section 27 (1) (c) of the constitution, which states that “everyone has the right to social security”.
Maruping says the UIF is pleased they were able to pay beneficiaries the R1 billion during the busy December period.

“I have no doubt that this R1 billion payout in benefits went a long way towards items such as purchasing stationery and uniforms for children in the beginning of the new year as schools reopened around the country.”

Maruping added that they are going to launch a new data-free mobile application (APP) in 2023 to improve service delivery to clients and stakeholders.
Maruping said the UIF will make announcements on the data-free mobile APP and other developments in due course.
“We will also be enhancing our information and communication technology systems and launching a data-free mobile (APP), a free USSD system, and a few other platforms to improve service delivery to our clients and stakeholders.”
