The United Democratic Movement (UDM) launched its 2019 manifesto in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

The crowd was mainly dressed in white. They gathered at the stadium from around 8:00, waiting in anticipation for the party’s president, Bantu Holomisa, to deliver his speech at midday.

He was joined on stage by the Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Mongameli Bobani for the singing of the National Anthem to officially open the proceedings.

UDM president Bantu Holomisa criticised the ruling party

One of the highlights of the day was when UDM MP Nqabayomzi Kwankwa said the UDM is not a party to sell South Africans for “chicken chunks.” He added that Holomisa is not a corrupt leader “and has never lost sleep thinking otherwise.”

Holomisa said that the upcoming election should be about trust, and also touched on the country’s current Eskom and load shedding dilemma. Addressing the crowd at the Isaac Wolfson stadium, Holomisa added:

“I ask you, how can South Africans trust the ANC […] Despite onslaught, we went to the constitutional court with three other parties and proceeded to have the State Capture report published. The UDM’s track record speaks for itself.”

The billions of rands stolen as a result of State Capture was a setback of note. He went on to say that UDM would put the economic needs of the country first and that South Africa needs an “economic vision of where we’re going in the next 10 years.”

UDM leader said South Africans deserve better

He added that the ANC lost its moral compass, and that “South Africa is not the ANC.” Holomisa believes that South Africans deserved better than the ruling party and said:

“When the UDM comes into power, one of the things we’ll invest in is professionalising the civil system.”
