E-hailing service drivers (Uber and Bolt amongst others) have threatened a stay away from the 8th of August unless they get a fare increase from management.

The drivers are accusing Uber and Bolt of prioritising commission and undermining them. In March this year, the drivers also embarked on a nationwide strike pleading for government’s intervention. Chief among their complaints was the fact that the sector isn’t regulated, which they said paves the way for them being exploited by the companies.

In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Chairperson of E-hailing Partners Council, Henry Mathebula, said the driver’s march to Uber offices in Johannesburg earlier this year was driven by two burning issues (even though they have many) that have been there for years.

Mathebula said petrol has increased several times since January this year but fares have not and they are operating on a loss.

“What is R2 in this economic climate and conditions we are working under? They are undermining the rights of the drivers.

“We are saying enough is enough, we can’t go back to the road operating on a loss. We are not really hoping for any change or a price increase because these e-hailing companies are arrogant,” he continued.

Mathebula also touched on Uber leaks which revealed how Uber created working conditions that compromised the safety of drivers.

In conclusion, Mathebula, emphasised they will not be operating on 8 August and will be staying at home until they figure out what they need to do in order for transformation to take place in the industries.
