A Mpumulanga family has been left devastated after a two-year-old boy was seriously injured when his dad accidentally run over him in their driveway.

DANIEL (2) IS CURRENTLY RECOVERING IN HOSPITAL

Little two-year-old Daniel Kerswell is currently under light sedation and connected to a ventilator in Pretoria’s Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

His mother Danelle said they are all so traumatised at what happened on Sunday.

She said her husband, Paul, wanted to drive to his friend’s house on Sunday morning while she was in the kitchen busy preparing breakfast for Daniel and his older brother Ayden (4).

“We are always so careful, and we always make sure the children are inside the house when we drive out. Paul said goodbye to the boys and left. He closed the gate at the door to ensure the boys did not go out of the house,” said an emotional Danelle.

She said it all happened so fast. One moment Daniel and Ayden were in the kitchen, and the next moment they were gone.

“I instinctively knew something was wrong, and I ran out. I saw Daniel lying on the driveway, unconscious. We grabbed him and immediately started with CPR. I just kept on begging him to please breath, just please breathe… and then all of a sudden, he took a breath and started crying.”

Danelle said they jumped in the car and rushed Daniel to the nearest hospital, where he was examined and stablised.

A very concerned older brother, Ayden, kept crying and asking his mommy if his little brother Daniel was dead.

“A doctor advised us that Daniel will get better treatment in Pretoria, so we started phoning around looking for a government hospital that had a bed available for Daniel.

She explained that they don’t have medical aid.

“We were lucky enough to get a bed for Daniel in the Steve Biko Academic Hospital. An ambulance drove Daniel to the hospital in Pretoria, where he was immediately admitted.”

Little Daniel was sent for scans and X-rays, and it was determined that his lungs were damaged in the accident. He broke his right clavicle and left hip.

He also sustained a deep laceration on his abdomen, and his little face is bruised.

“We are so thankful. We have received so much love and support from everyone during this difficult time.”

Danelle pleaded that people would continue to pray for her blonde, blue-eyed little boy.

“I would just like to ask that everyone keep on praying for him.“
