Two suspects apprehended after robbing Blue Route mall jewellery store

The Blue Route Mall in Tokai, Cape Town was hit by robbers on Monday afternoon, and two out of five suspects who allegedly robbed a jewellery store were arrested. They robbed the store and instantly fled the scene.

As they were trying to get away, a police officer who was also at the shopping centre at the time hunted them down and arrested two suspects

The management confirmed that one of its stores was robbed, it was revealed it was the jewellery store opposite Dischem in the mall. The centre management further stated that the mall is now operating as usual. A spokesperson for the mall said the gang had managed to get away with an undisclosed amount of goods.

According to Eye Witness News, Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said shots were fired but no one was injured.

“It is alleged that five suspects, two armed with firearms, robbed a jewellery store. The police officer stopped them in their tracks while trying to flee. Two men, aged 24 and 28, were arrested.”

This is not the first jewellery store to be hit

Recently Cape Quarter in De Waterkant and Longbeach Mall in Noordhoek were also victims to a jewellery store robbery. In both cases, suspects fled the scene with undisclosed amount.

Investigations are still in the air regarding if these mall robbers are part of a crime syndicate.

“The mall has 24-hour security services and the mall areas are monitored by CCTV that are continuously upgraded to ensure we offer SAPS the necessary support for successful arrests.”

In recent months an increase in mall robberies has been prevalent in South Africa, here are safety tips to abide by incase of a robbery:

  • Cooperate with robbers for your own safety. Listen to their instructions closely and follow their instructions
  • Try and keep as calm as possible. Everyone reacts in a different way but try and breathe deeply until help arrives
  • Do not use your cell phone whilst the robbery is in progress as this could agitate the assailants
  • Immediately try and find a sheltered spot and keep low on the ground
  • Take note of the assailants to pass information on to the authorities i.e. what they were wearing, any distinctive clothes, markings, jewellery etc. Try and remember what they look like i.e. height, weight, etc.
  • Ensure your children are kept close to you at all times. Do not let children wander off while you are shopping.
  • Do not shop with large amounts of cash or valuables.
