Two officers shot, vehicle bombed in Kempton Park cash-in-transit heist

Two security officers sustained multiple gunshot wounds when their cash transit vehicle bombed in a heist in Kempton Park on Saturday.

Paramedics said two security officers were shot multiple times and injured when a cash-in-transit vehicle was bombed in a heist in Kempton Park on Saturday. 

PARAMEDICS FOUND THE FOLLOWING AT THE SCENE:

According to Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen, the incident happened on Plane Road in Kempton Park. 

“Paramedics responded to Plane Road and on arrival found a cash transit vehicle on its side and fire. 

“Two security officers were found to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were treated and stabilized by advanced life support paramedics before being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care,” Van Reenen said. 

WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE ATTACK? 

He said reports from the scene indicate that the vehicle was ambushed by a number of heavily armed suspects. 

“A shoot-out ensued, resulting in the injuries. The suspects then allegedly bombed the armoured vehicle,” he added. 

According to Van Reenen, the South African Police Services were in attendance and will be conducting the necessary investigations further.

RESEARCHERS WARNED OF AN INCREASE IN CIT ROBBERIES   

Last month researchers warned lockdown alert level 1 would witness an increase in cash-in-transit (CIT) heist robberies.

With the onslaught of increased CIT robberies now expected in alert level 1, what best response actions can South African law apply? The experts believe law officials need to collaborate to deliver smart crime responses and apply actionable plans.

“This requires sophisticated crime intelligence, the expertise to turn knowledge and information into actionable strategies, and of course coordination from all relevant stakeholders,” Kok added.

Fidelity Services Group spokesperson Wahl Bartmann, assured the nation that the teamwork with police and different private security response has already set the ball rolling ahead of the level 1 robbery spike.

“There has been an organisation that has already been set up. We are all getting together to share resources, information, and intelligence. We are working with police who have people that are stationed for these operations,” Baartman said.
