Two people were arrested after police chased down a suspicious vehicle and found five sheep in the car in the Mossel Bay area on 30 December 2022.

Five sheep found in car

Police and farm watches joined forces in a quick response to a stock theft incident reported on a Mossel Bay farm.

The response resulted in the arrest of two people and the recovery of stolen sheep.

On Friday, 30 December 2022, members of the Kwanonqaba Crime Prevention Unit, the Oudtshoorn Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, and various farm watches launched an operation after a suspicious red vehicle was spotted leaving a farm in the area.

During a chase along the N2 highway towards Mossel Bay, police officers pursued the vehicle, a red Toyota Corolla.

In an attempt to elude police, the vehicle left the road.

It came to a halt when one of the passengers fled the scene on foot.

A vehicle search resulted in the recovery of five sheep from the back seat and boot of the vehicle.

One occupant discovered at the scene was apprehended by police.

The freedom of the second suspect, allegedly the driver of the vehicle, was short-lived.

Detectives assigned to the case tracked him down and arrested him on 1 January 2023.

The two men, aged 21 and 33, are still being held by police.

They are set to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 3 January 2023.

They will appear on a charge of stock theft.

Men found slaughtering animals in a separate incident

In a separate incident, on 28 December 2022, Kwanonqaba police officers responded to a report of a Volkswagen Golf dropping off cattle at a residence in Kwanonqaba.

When they arrived at the location, they discovered four men slaughtering a sheep.

The four were arrested, and one of them, a 57-year-old man, was charged with possession of stolen property and stock theft.

The stolen sheep were later linked to a farm in the area.

Both cases are being probed by the Oudtshoorn Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit.
