Two people were injured when the wooden deck of their family home in La Mercy in KwaZulu-Natal collapsed.

The incident happened during a family gathering on Wednesday, 28 December 2022.

TEN PEOPLE WERE GATHERING FOR A FAMILY EVENT

Arrive Alive reported that Medi Response Search and Rescue attended to the scene where they established that a wooden deck had collapsed resulting in the injury of two people.

They said the cause of the structural failure is unknown.

“It was reported that 10 people had been on the deck for a family event when the incident occurred.”

The IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics said they rushed to the scene where they found two people who was injured when the deck collapsed.

“Reports from the scene indicate that a number of people were on a wooden deck taking photo when the deck collapse under them.”

Two people sustained moderate injuries and they were treated by IPSS paramedics.

They two injured people were transported to a nearby hospital where they are receiving further medical care. It is unclear what the causes the deck to collapse.

In Gauteng, firefighters and emergency rescue personnel responded to a fire that broke out in a building on 28 December 2022.

The fire broke out at a house south of Johannesburg.

No one was injured in the fire, but the building is severely damaged.

Earlier this year another house in Twilight Avenue in La Mercy along the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal suffered immense damage because of the heavy rain in the province.

The damage was a result of collapsed stormwater pipe in the area, according to reports.

A spokesperson for the Tongaat Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Nazir Sadack said a that after the pipe collapsed water flowed onto the property and washed away the soil, which caused the house’s foundation to give way.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and the eThekwini municipality is working at stabilising the area and restoring water.
