These twins have got South Africans talking thanks to their impressive matric results. That’s not all that’s got South Africans hooked, though…

IOL spoke to Bongi and Antony Fleischer about their terrific results and of course, sibling rivalry (a lifelong experience for the pair).

Antony’s Distinctions: economics, English, information technology, life orientation, maths and science

Bongi’s Distinctions: economics, English, life orientation, biology, maths, science and Zulu.

“I think the competition between us has always been friendly,” Bongi told The Mercury

Anthony says for all the rivalry, there is plenty of helping each other out.

“We’ve learnt how to complement each other and bring out the best in each other. For example, how I can help Bongi with his driver’s licence and how he can help me study.”

The pair are also impressive sportsmen and leaders. Bongi was head boy and Antony was head of house. The twins played first team water polo and rugby.

“Ant played first team, though, and I played third,” Bongi said.

When the interviewer asked what their differences were, Bongi was described as being “very methodical and thinks things through”. Antony on the other hand, was happy to admit that he was a bit more spontaneous.

The pair now plans to grab spots at universities in the United States. Their mother is from there and they’re fans of the education system. Will they be splitting up? Not a chance…

“We’ve been together our whole lives. It would be weird being apart,” Bongi said.

“Well, I was without him for about two minutes,” Antony added.

The overall IEB 2017 pass rate has risen from 98,67% to 98,76%. 88% of the leaners who passed, also qualified to begin studying a bachelor’s degree at university. School examination body, Umalusi, declared the results valid and fair after monitoring the marking.
