The Western Cape police arrested a suspect in connection with the mass murder in Tulbagh that left four men dead and another injured on Saturday evening, 25 June.

MAN ARRESTED FOR TULBAGH MASS MURDER

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said the arrest was carried out on Tuesday.

“Detectives attached to the Western Cape Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit pursued all avenues and conducted their search for a known drug dealer in the local Marikana informal settlement which resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old undocumented Lesotho national,” he said.

The arrested suspect is expected to appear before the Tulbagh court on Thursday, 30 June. He will be facing four murder charges and one attempted murder charge.

The police spokesperson said the investigation into the mass killing is continuing and more arrests are a possibility.

SHOOTING ON JOOSTE STREET

The bodies of the victims – aged between 28 and 35 – were found at a house in Jooste Street at approximately 21:00 on Saturday. The fifth victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The Tulbagh police immediately launched a 72-hour activation plan to investigate the matter and later offered a R100 000 reward for information that could lead to arrests.

At the time of the shooting, six men and three women were socialising at the house in Jooste Street when unknown suspects appeared and opened fire, said Traut.
