City of Tshwane’s #TshwaneYaTima campaign is now targeting the rich, aiming to disconnect those in estates with arrears in their utility accounts.

TSHWANE TARGETS CUSTOMERS IN ESTATES

The City of Tshwane’s revenue collection campaign is still on. This time, those living in estates could face disconnection of services due to outstanding bills.

Several households in various estate establishments have been identified for having their municipal accounts in arrears.

On Tuesday, the city targeted residents at Copperleaf Estate in Centurion, one of the identified estates.

“The top 25 accounts in arrears within the estate range between R200 000 and R500 000,” said Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba.

From the 600 accounts that the city had initially identified, 96 customers who are in arrears had their electricity supply disconnected, he said.

156 households at Copperleaf had their water restricted due to arrears. But it seems the rich are not immune to illegal activity as 30 electricity meters were found to have been tampered with.

“The City also replaced 28 conventional meters with prepaid meters.”

ANOTHER ESTATE GETS THE CUT

In Sable Hills Waterfront Estate, the city found that 11 meters were tampered with. After auditing 298 accounts, 285 meters remained in good condition.

“Two conventional meters were replaced with prepaid. There were accounts in arrears that had to be disconnected,” Bokaba said.

Those in estates with accounts in arrears will be targeted in the next few weeks. Action will be taken against all customers in arrears or who have tampered with meters.

“It must be emphasised that tampering fees will be levied to all meters found tampered or illegally connected,” Bokaba said.

The following residential establishments will be visited:

  • Sable Hills Waterfront
  • Eldo Park (Eldoraigne)
  • Kosmosdal (all extensions)
  • Silverlakes Estate
  • Irene Farm Village
  • Amberfield Valley
  • Sunderland Ridge
  • Thatchfield
  • Thatchfield Hills
  • Centurion Golf Estate

AMNESTY PERIOD STILL OPEN

But those who are illegally connected to electricity and water networks can still apply for amnesty to avoid fines and criminal charges.

The amnesty period, which started last month, comes to an end on 30 September. Those who want to apply for amnesty can download forms from the City of Tshwane’s website – www.tshwane.gov.za and submit them to amnesty@tshwane.gov.za.
