A group of residents were protesting outside Jubilee Hospital on Monday, 22 May. The group prevented Brink from entering the hospital as the death toll increases.

Residents slammed the Democratic Alliance (DA) which has been running the City of Tshwane saying service delivery is poor.

“They are not attending to our needs, people had to die so that they can come. The death toll is more than the number that has been announced by officials, others who died were not admitted here at Jubilee. What are they here for now? The water crisis has been going on for years. We can’t even drink the tap water, they can’t even maintain the water tankers,” the resident said.

SAHRC PROBE ON ONGOING WATER CRISIS

A few years ago, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) also probed the ongoing crisis in Hammanskraal. Its report found the City of Tshwane had not met its constitutional obligation to provide clean water to residents.

The Commission said lack of clean water was a violation of Human Rights as families say they can’t use the brownish and slimy water coming out of their taps.

In August 2021, ActionSA tabled a report which confirmed that the water poses serious health risks.

The report found that the water can cause deadly diseases like cancer and has a severe impact on people’s nervous system, due to toxic iron and copper levels.

The report was handed over to the City of Tshwane and the party gave the municipality 90 days to come up with a solution. Then City of Tshwane Executive Mayor, Randall Williams said they do not need 90 days as they were already acting on the matter.
