On-duty Tshwane firefighter shot and killed outside fire station

The Tshwane firefighter went out to meet a person she had an appointment with after answering a call from the said person.

A 59-year-old firefighter from the City of Tshwane emergency services has been shot and killed outside the Bronkhorstspruit fire station. 

Sonile Annah Mnguni was shot on Wednesday night, 16 February. 

TSHWANE FIREFIGHTER LURED OUTSIDE WITH A PHONE CALL

City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson, Charles Mabaso said they are in a state of shock following the news. 

“According to fellow firefighters, 59-year-old Leading Firefighter Sonile Annah Mnguni went out to meet a person she had an appointment with after answering a call from the said person. They then claim to have heard gunshots moments after she had gone out of the fire station. 

“After recovering from the shock and fear of the gunshots they heard, the crew went outside in search of her. Her body was discovered about 100 metres away from the fire station with multiple gunshot wounds. A paramedic certified her dead on the scene.

CONDOLENCES POUR IN FOR MNGUNI

Condolences for the slain firefighter have already started pouring in.

“The Emergency Services Department would like to offer condolences to her family, colleagues and friends for her untimely passing. The department has activated the Employee Wellness Section to offer counselling support for employees and the family of the deceased.”

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson, William Ntladi also offered condolences and urged communities to respect the work they as emergency services do.

“This is a gruesome killing of one of us. Condolences to Mnguni’s loved ones. We hope that colleagues, family and friends will be able to recover from this. Its is sad that we are killed by the very same community we are serving,” Ntladi said.

The motive for the gruesome killing is not yet known and is under investigation by the South African Police Service.
