Trevor Manuel chimes in on Gordhan saga; firing Pravin would destroy SA economy

Trevor Manuel, arguably South Africa’s most successful finance minister to date, not to mention the longest-serving, believes that the current attacks on finance minister Pravin Gordhan could very well lead to a complete collapse of the economy.

Trevor Manuel, under whose leadership as minister of finance South Africa’s economy boomed, believes that the continent’s most developed economy would collapse if Jacob Zuma got rid of Pravin Gordhan.

On Wednesday the Hawks confirmed that they had summoned Gordhan and several former SARS officials to account for the alleged role they played in relation to the contravention of surveillance regulations; which cost the Rand 3% and sparked fresh speculation of a plot to get rid of Gordhan.

“Such action will destroy this economy. The next move is actually up to the head of state to call them (the Hawks) in and say: if you have compelling evidence let’s see what it is,” Manuel said in an interview with eNCA.
