TRAGIC: Five children die in shack fire as mothers ‘visit tavern’

Two sisters are in police custody after allegedly leaving their children alone in a shack to go drinking. A fire broke out, and investigations are ongoing.

Police took two sisters in for questioning when their five children, supposedly left alone overnight, suffered severe burns in a shack fire near Laudium, Pretoria.

At 4:26 am, emergency services in Tshwane were notified of the fire that razed six shacks in the Itireleng settlement according to Times Live.

Five children perish in shack fire while mothers out ‘drinking at tavern’

Five children were allegedly left overnight by their mothers in the shack where they were killed by a shack fire.

Firefighters reached the area and saw several shacks on fire. They promptly began fighting the flames.

After the fire was put out, they found the burnt bodies of five children, two boys aged two, four, and six, and two girls, aged one and five months, and seven.

The five children were from two sisters, according to Thabo Mabaso, a spokesperson for Tshwane emergency services.

Two sisters are accused of leaving their children alone in a shack overnight while they went to a nearby bar. The sisters were arrested by the police for questioning when this statement was issued.

Mabaso also mentioned that an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

He emphasised the importance of parents and caregivers ensuring that children are always supervised by adults in a safe place.

Earlier in the week, a mother from Limpopo has been arrested after her 10-month-old daughter’s passing pending postmortem outcomes.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, a police spokesperson, stated that the infant was discovered interred in a shallow trench within her Giyani residence.

“They became suspicious and on Monday, they looked around the yard and noticed a shallow grave. Community members gathered at her house in her absentia and police were notified. They immediately followed the leads and traced the woman.

“She was taken to her house, where she pointed out a shallow grave in which she buried her daughter.”

Inquiring, the mother explained that her disabled daughter had passed away due to sickness.She informed the police that she alone laid the child to rest because there was no birth certificate.
