The South African Tourism Acting Chief Financial Officer (CFO) has resigned after being implicated in the R1 billion English Premier League soccer team Tottenham Hotspur sleeve sponsorship saga.

CFO RESIGNED OVER R1BN TOTTENHAM DEAL

Acting CFO Johan van der Walt resigned two days after he had been served with a notice of suspension on Tuesday, 14 February 2023, by the new SA tourism board chairperson Dr. Thosamile Botha.

CFO LINKED TO AGENCY THAT STANDS TO BENEFIT

Van der Walt had until yesterday, 21 February 2023, to state why he should not be suspended, as IOL reported.

He was hired in January 2023 for a post he was due to act in for just seven months.

The acting CFO said he resigned due to the Tottenham Hotspur deal saga. He is linked to an agency set to receive over R30 million from the sponsorship deal with Tottenham Hotspur.

HE CLAIMS ZERO FINANCIAL INTEREST IN TOTTENHAM DEAL

Van der Walt says he has no financial interests with the agency, WWP Group. However, he confirmed that he had done consulting work for the firm.

Botha indicated that neither he nor the board was aware of an alleged conflict of interest involving Van der Walt as he failed to declare his interest in meetings.

Meanwhile, SA Tourism is believed to be moving ahead with the Tottenham Spurs sponsorship deal. They think it would bring tourists who love football to South Africa.

South Africa’s R1bn Tottenham Hotspur sponsorship deal is only for the shirt sleeve.

Three SA Tourism board members, Rosemary Anderson, Ravi Nadasen, and Enver Duminy, have since resigned in protest against the deal.
