The Eastern Cape High Court in Bhisho sentenced a 49-year-old woman to 17 years imprisonment, on Thursday, 27 May, for beating a 19-month-old baby girl to death in 2020.

The woman, Ncedeni Qwabe, was involved in a love affair with Qhamokuhle Ndziba’s – the toddler – uncle, Sityebi Ndziba, 47. The deceased was in the care of the couple, in the Eastern Cape, while her mother was employed in Cape Town.

TODDLER BEATEN TO DEATH AFTER SPILLING WATER

Anelisa Ngcakani, the regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Eastern Cape, said the fatal assault took place at the couple’s home in Keiskammahoek on 27 July 2020.

Qwabe beat the child with a peach tree stick because she spilled water on the floor while being bathed, according to the NPA.

Qwabe said that she merely hit Qhamokuhle lightly with a washcloth but she changed her tune after being questioned by authorities.

“… during cross-examination by the prosecutor, Advocate Louis Sinclair, she revealed that she beat the child up with a peach tree stick,” said Ngcakani.

The toddler succumbed to her injuries later that same evening due to internal injuries and blood loss.

The Eastern Cape Division of High Court of South Africa at Bhisho sentenced Qwabe to 17 years in jail for the brutal killing.
