Limpopo police helped a young mother give birth at the Roedtan station on Sunday, 30 May. The South African Police Service (SAPS) said that two of its members, Constable Mnisi and Sergeant Mogoru, assisted the young mother and called an ambulance immediately after the newborn was delivered.

BABY DELIVERED IN POLICE STATION BOARDROOM

According to SAPS spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the mother went to the Roedtan Community Service Centre – which is just outside Modimolle – at 13:30 on Sunday and complained about labour pains.

“Constable Mnisi was on duty and she managed to contact Sergeant Mogoru who was on patrol duties and she quickly rushed back to the station,” said Ngoepe.

The two police officers used the boardroom of the station as an emergency delivery room and successfully brought a newborn baby girl into the world. After the birth Constable Mnisi and Sergeant Mogoru summoned an ambulance to transport the mother and infant to hospital.

Moguru told the SAPS spokesperson that she understands the risks involved in incidents such as this, adding that police officers are often faced with situations that ask them to go above and beyond the “normal SAPS mandate” in order to save lives.

Mogoru said she used her own emergency kit and resources during all these incidents.

BABY DELIVERED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD

In an unrelated incident, a mother went into labour on the side of the road in Elandsfontein, Gauteng at 3:00 on Monday morning, 7 June.

The mother was attended to by paramedics from Emer-G-Med EMS, who responded to the incident and helped to deliver the newborn baby.

According to the emergency service, both mother and baby are healthy and there were no birth complications. The pair were transported privately to hospital.
