A scene of unimaginable brutality has been reported in Gauteng on Monday morning, after the Provincial Department of Education confirmed there was a serious incident at the Thuto Tiro Comprehensive School in Sebokeng – located within the Vaal area. Students reportedly “screamed in horror” as the ghastly scene unfolded.

Thuto Tiro stabbing: One pupil confirmed dead

The Department issued a communication on their Twitter page earlier in the day, stating that emergency services had been summonded to the school but were ultimately unsuccessful in saving the teen’s life. Panyaza Lesufi has dashed to the scene, in a bid to find out what exactly caused this tragic altercation.

“It is with sadness and shock to inform that a learner was this morning stabbed to death by another learner with scissors at Thuto Tiro Comprehensive school at Zone 10 Sebokeng, in Vaal. MEC Panyaza Lesufi is rushing to the scene”

Panyaza Lesufi reacts to the situation

Lesufi is due to give a briefing on the situation later this afternoon. Gauteng has been inundated with violent incidents at schools this year, and it’s not the first time a fatal stabbing between classmates has been reported. The brutal nature of this crime – committed with a weapon on school grounds – has rocked the local community.

Tensions are threatening to boil over in the region, and MEC Lesufi was forced to defend the state of the province’s schools on Twitter. Reacting to a social media user, he supported the work his department does and reasoned that “schools are not immune from South Africa’s violent nature”.

Thuto Tiro: Stabbed pupil “thought to have been in Grade 9”

We’re waiting on a second source to confirm, but we’ve been told that the victim was a learner in Grade 9. Reports emerging from the school still need to be verified, but what we do know is that a horrendous act of violence has cut another young life tragically short.

  • This is a developing story and we are waiting on more updates on the situation: We will publish more information, as and when it comes through to us on Monday.
