The Black Reel Awards, commonly referred to as The Bolts, honour African-American greatness and the African diaspora’s cinematic accomplishments in the international film business.

The KwaZulu-Natal-born actress won Outstanding Breakthrough Actress at the 23rd Annual Black Reel Awards for her outstanding portrayal of Nawi in The Woman King.

At the Black Reel Trophies on Monday night, The Woman King stood out as the top winner, taking home six awards, including Best Picture.Viola Davis took home the Best Actress prize, while Gina Prince-Bythewood was named Best Director.

The incredible tale of the struggles faced by the fearsome Agojie warriors and Dahomey is told in The Woman King, which was inspired by actual events.

The movie was filmed in regions that closely resemble West Africa: KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. Mbedu has received recognition for her breakthrough international leading role in The Underground Railroad with the Independent Spirit Award, a Gotham Award, and a Hollywood Critics Award.

Thuso Mbedu: First South African actress to star in US TV series

She became the first South African actress to play the lead role in an American TV series in 2021’s Amazon Video short series The Underground Railroad.

She received two Gotham Awards for Outstanding Performance in a New Series and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Performance in a New Scripted Series for her performance in the series.

She was listed among the top 10 actors of 2022 by the New York Times.

Meanwhile, The Woman King will be streamable, according to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Beginning on 10 February 2023, The Woman King will make its eagerly awaited debut on DStv Box Office, Apple TV, Google Play, and other platforms.
