Three trucks set alight in protest action on the N2 in Ermelo

Police were on high alert on Thursday after three trucks and a bakkie were set alight on Wednesday amid protest action on the N2 in Ermelo.

Three trucks and a bakkie were set alight, and several other vehicles were damaged when a protest on the N2 in Ermelo turned violent on Wednesday evening.

POLICE WERE ON HIGH ALERT ON THURSDAY

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdluli said police have heightened visibility monitoring the situation on the N2 in Ermelo.

This comes after three trucks and a bakkie were set alight, as well as two other trucks damaged on Wednesday evening.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the incident erupted following a labour related dispute at a construction site at Merino Mall in Ermelo.”

Mdluli said a case of public violence had been opened while no injuries were reported.

“No one has been arrested so far.”

Meanwhile, thousands of EFF supporters marched through the streets of Phoenix to the local police station to hand over a memorandum of demands following the killings in the suburb during the recent unrest.

Economic Freedom Fighter KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Vusi Khoza told Phoenix residents at the start of the opposition political party’s march that they were marching to “confront racists”.

“People of Phoenix need not to worry. We are here to confront racists in Phoenix. If you are not a racist you don’t have to worry about anything.”

Residents counted as many as 37 buses parked in one part of the suburb, that had been used to transport thousands of EFF supporters to the province to join the march.
