The South African Police have arrested three suspects for cable theft at four substations in the south of Johannesburg over the weekend, causing multiple power outages.

The thieves stole cables at the Nancefield, Eldorado Park, Nirvana, and Soweto substations in the south of Johannesburg.

According to City Power, three suspects were arrested for cable theft while they were on the way to sell the cable to a scrapyard in the area.

Eldorado Park and Lenasia experienced a power outage because of cable theft at the Nancefield Substation. Five cables appeared to be cut here.

POLICE ARREST FOUR SUSPECTS FOR CABLE THEFT

Earlier the same day, cables were stolen in Soweto and led power outage in areas around Baragwanath Hospital and Power.

Technicians restored the power to Eldorado and Nirvana Substations, which also had outages due to cable theft.

It will take a considerable amount of time to restore the Nancefield Substation, and we are calling on the community to be patient.

While City Power is doing everything possible to restore power, the issue of cable theft remains one of the biggest problems hampering our efforts to provide services.

“We would like to thank the community who played a role in the arrest of the suspects. We continue to call upon residents to be vigilant and report any destruction to our infrastructure,” City Power stated.

The suspects will appear in court soon.
