Three Eskom security guards shot and injured in Winterveld attack

Police are investigating the attack in which three Eskom security guards were attacked, shot, and injured at the Winterveld substation.
WHAT HAPPENED ON THE EVENING OF THE ATTACK?
According to the power utility, three of the four guards who were on duty at Winterveld substation on Sunday night were shot and wounded when four armed suspects opened fire on them.
“At around 22:30, the two static guards opened the gate for the two guards to leave the substation after completing a routine patrol.
“As the two security guards were about to get inside the vehicle to drive off, suddenly four suspects appeared shooting randomly while advancing towards the four guards,” said Eskom in a statement.

THREE GUARDS WERE SHOT, INJURED AND ROBBED
Three of the guards sustained gunshot wounds and were robbed of their firearms and cell phones.
The four suspects then fled the scene and one of the static guards managed to report the incident to their control room.
The wounded guards were treated at the Legae Mediclinic Hospital and were discharged on 22 February 2022.
“Eskom condemns these acts of criminality and requests members of the public to provide information that can lead to the arrest and the successful prosecution of those involved,” said the power giant.

Meanwhile, an Eskom employee was arrested earlier this month for allegedly stealing transformer oil and power safety solvent gel.
“The employee was caught by Eskom security personnel when trying to exit the utility premises in Rosherville, Johannesburg, with three full drums of transformer oil, an empty one, as well as six containers of 5 litre power safety solvent gel, for which he had no full removal permit. The South African Police Service (SAPS) was called and the suspect was apprehended and taken into custody. The suspect appeared in court on Monday, 14 February 2022 on a charge of theft,” Eskom said in a statement.
