A 29-year-old suspect was arrested for his alleged involvement in the brutal murder of Thobani Khambule, 13, from Mbazwana, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)

The boy’s burnt body was found in bushes in the Mtanenkosi area on 29 May. He was last seen alive the day before the gruesome discovery was made.

POLICE MAKE BREAKTHROUGH IN TEEN MURDER CASE

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the man was taken in for questioning on Tuesday, 31 May, after there were reports that he was the person last seen with Thobani.

“Following this development in the investigation, police proceeded to an old abandoned house where the head of the victim was found in a pit toilet,” said Gwala.

The police also found a bush knife that was used in the murder at the scene, added the spokesperson.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Mbazwana Periodical Court on Thursday, 2 June on a murder charge.

“This is heartbreaking to learn about the killing of an innocent child in such a brutal manner as we are celebrating the Child Protection Week,” said Gwala.

The police said any form of abuse children are subjected to must immediately be reported to SAPS or social workers.
