The EFF has just announced that their commander in Cheif Julius Malema will today deliver an application at the constitutional court. The party wants the court to order the speaker of parliament to “institute impeachment or disciplinary proceedings  against President Zuma.” The red berets are seeking impeachment after Zuma’s conduct associated with the Nkandla scandal, including “lying to parliament on various occasions.”

“Tomorrow is exactly one  year since the Concourt handed down its historic judgment in the EFF’s Nkandla application. Since then we have made numerous appeals and wrote several letters to the Speaker of Parliament. All have fallen on deaf ears and have been met with violence by Parliament on EFF MPs.”

The EFF say they now have no other choice but to approach the Constitutional Court “as a last resort.

“We approach the Constitutional Court as a last resort based on the belief that Zuma’s conduct around the Nkandla matter, both inside and outside of Parliament, renders him unfit to hold the high office of President of the Republic of South Africa.”

Malema will personally deliver the necessary papers to the Constitutional Court at 14:30 today. There have been a few attempts to oust President Zuma from the presidency over the years, the most recent coming from ANC members themselves after Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom tabled a motion of no confidence in an NEC meeting. After discussion amongst the members, it was found that Zuma still had enough support within his cabinet.

An impeachment attempt has also previously been brought to parliament by the DA, all ANC MPs stood behind their president and voted in his favour.  If this court application is successful by the EFF, Speaker of The House Baleka Mbethe will have “no option” but to facilitate impeachment proceedings against Zuma.
