The wait is over – the 2020 matric results are out now

The matric class of 2020 can access their results via several avenues, including the Department of Basic Education’s website and their respective schools

The results of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examinations for the class of 2020 are finally out. Matric pupils from the previous year can access their results through various avenues, including the Basic Education Department’s website.

However they have also been encouraged to visit their respective schools for the official statement of results. The department has assured matriculants that all the necessary anti-COVID-19 preventative measures are in place in schools, including sanitizer.

Social media has been awash with posts from successful matriculants who gleefully showed off their results.

The full provincial matric results for 2020, ranked from highest to lowest pass rates, are as follows:

  • Free State: 85.1%
  • Gauteng: 83.3%
  • Western Cape: 79.9%
  • KwaZulu-Natal (KZN): 77.6%
  • North West: 76.2
  • Mpumalanga: 73.7%
  • Limpopo: 68.2
  • Eastern: Cape 68.1%
  • Northern: Cape 66%

Angie Motshekga on matric results: ‘I’m relieved’

Minister Angie Motshekga announced on Monday, 22 February  2021, that the class of 2020 had achieved a 767.2% pass rate. Motshekga said while she was not happy about the fact that the matric pass rate saw a more than 5% drop from the previous year, she felt relieved as she had actually expected far worse.

“I do feel relieved, we have learnt a lot and I think those lessons are going to help us moving forward and make us stronger. I would have wished for more but I am relieved,” she said.

Motshekga has lauded stakeholders for their support during the COVID-19 pandemic, which certainly made learning challenging for pupils.

More than one million pupils sat down for the matric examinations in 2020.

The 2020 matric examinations were marred by the leaking of the Mathematics and Physical Sciences question papers. This prompted the Department of Basic Education to order a rewrite of both exams, however the decision was then reversed after Afriforum and the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) approached the courts
