Mxolisi Mgolozeli, a security guard at the University of the Free State (UFS), has overcome seemingly insurmountable odds by attaining a Master’s Degree in governance and political transformation.

The protection service employee was awarded his degree at the Callie Human Centre in Bloemfontein on Thursday. Mgolozeli proved once again it’s never too late to learn, after starting his undergraduate studies at the age of 43.

It was always Mgolozeli’s goal to become educated and qualified as something other than a security. In a display of great commitment, he would spend his evenings in the campus library, studying towards his goal. This while all his colleagues had already clocked off their shifts, and were heading home to their families.

Never too old to learn new tricks

Mgolozeli told Times Live that it took great personal perseverance to attain his degree:

“After almost 20 years of being out of school‚ having to start my undergraduate degree at that age was difficult but it is all about commitment and sacrifice. It was not easy but I like education‚ so I think this motivated me.”

The Master’s graduate started working for the UFS in 2003, first as an ordinary security guard, but later being promoted to supervisor in 2013. Even though Mgolozeli had to work 12-hour shifts every day, he didn’t let that stand in the way of his dream.

Dr Tania Coetzee, who was Mgolozeli’s supervisor at the time of his master’s studies, commends his perseverance and resolve, saying:

“As his supervisor‚ I acknowledge the fact that he has worked very hard and has shown dedication in his studies.”

Mgolozeli’s research focused on the influence and effectiveness of ward committees, particularly in the area of community participation. Much of his research was focused on the Mangaung Municipality.

Where to from here for Mxolisi Mgolozeli?

Although the recent graduate enjoys his job as a security supervisor, he says he would like to move into the realm of academics and research, stating:

“I would like to get a mentor in academia so that I can encourage other students‚ even my own kids. That is my wish for the future.”
