A new study by Analytico, a data and earnings analytic consultancy, shows some pretty shocking pay gaps between white and black professionals in South Africa.

Based on 692 704 individuals, the company conducted a comparative earnings analysis of genders across different races to indicate any major discrepancies, using the Analytico Salary Analysis ModelTM.

The stats will make you cringe.

White male professionals earn about 42% more than white females while black female professionals earn about 17% more than black males.

But here’s the kicker: white males working in the formal sector earn on average R21 700 per month. Black males in the formal sector averaged just R3 612. White male professionals in the formal sector earned as much as R30 453 per month and black male professionals in the formal sector earned just R9 244.

White females working in the formal sector earn around R13 331 while white professional females earned around R17 700 compared to black females earning R2 887 and R11 155 respectively.

Professionals are classified as occupations which requires a high level of professional knowledge, skills and experience.

Analytico noted that not everyone can earn the same, but said that the following criteria should be considered when determining salaries:

Seniority and tenure;
Qualifications, abilities and competencies;
Ratings on performance evaluations that have been consistently applied;
Restructuring and demotion without the decrease in salary;
Temp employees that have different terms and conditions of employment;
Shortage of relevant skills in a particular job classification.
Any other relevant factors that do not unfairly discriminate.
