The Gathering media edition is returning to Cape Town this August after 2017’s impressive turnout. With more big-name politicians and journalists on the lineup, those with even the slightest interest in the media industry should get ready for another incredible day.

The Gathering 2018: Another Media edition ready for Cape Town

Put together each year by The Daily Maverick, the Gathering events has become known as the go-to media business event in South Africa.

With previous guests ranging from Pravin Gordhan to Julis Malema, the event contains exciting interviews and panel discussions hosted by some of the finest journalists in Mzansi.

The 2018 Cape Town edition will take place on 15 August at the International Convention Centre (ICC). The event will focus on the news media challenges and how they influence politics, business and civil society in South Africa.

An exclusive first interview with the whistleblowers from the GuptaLeaks (who have been in hiding for over a year) will also be shown to the audience. For their safety, the interview is pre-recorded and their identities will be masked.

“Since its establishment in 2010, The Gathering has presented a packed day of rigorous debate among South Africa’s top politicians, business leaders, activists and media practitioners about some of the most pressing topics of the day. This lineup is no different,” The Daily Maverick said in a statement.

They really aren’t exaggerating either, embattled City of Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille is the standout guest alongside the EFF’s Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, DA’s Phumzile van Damme and Afrotone Media Holding’s Mzwanele Manyi.

Sidenote: Manyi is the man who took over and bought ANN7 (now AfroWorldview) from the Guptas.

Other speakers include South African National Editors Forum Mahlatse Mahlase, legendary local cartoonist Zapiro, News24 editor Adriaan Basson, SAFM radio host Stephen Grootes and Daily Maverick Editor at Large Richard Poplak.
