The City of Tshwane pleads with residents to use water sparingly so that the impact of the current water challenges can be minimised.

Rand Water has indicated that they intend to control water flow to the City of Tshwane to reduce water consumption.

The City of Tshwane said Rand Water had indicated that it had noticed that water consumption in Tshwane and other municipalities had increased significantly, resulting in a decline in its overall reservoir storage capacity.

“The high-water consumption is exacerbated by the recent heat wave as well as the lack of rainfall,” the City said.

TSHWANE RESIDENTS MUST REDUCE WATER CONSUMPTION

To avoid more reservoirs running dry, resulting in more water shortages, the City of Tshwane pleads with residents to assist by decreasing their water consumption.

Tshwane residents can use the following water-saving tips:

  • Do not irrigate or water gardens with a hosepipe or irrigation system during morning and afternoon peak hours.
  • Avoid using a hosepipe to clean driveways or patios
  • Do not wash vehicles with a hosepipe
  • Avoid filling or topping up swimming pools or water features during this period

“Load shedding does not assist the situation either, as pumping hours are reduced due to a lack of power supply to water treatment plants during load shedding,” they said.

This necessitated Rand Water to implement water restrictions, with immediate effect, on several high-consuming water meters in the municipality.

The current Rand Water system capacity has dropped from 60% to around 30%, which is very serious and critical. If the situation does not change, the bulk water supply system of Rand Water will continue to drop and eventually collapse.

The following areas in the City of Tshwane already experiencing water shortages:

  • Waterkloof Ridge
  • Parts of Monument Park
  • Grootfontein
  • Shanguve Block L, M, K, LKK, and H
