30 Seconds To Mars had rock junkies going all kinds of crazy as they performed in South Africa this past week as part of their Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams Tour.

Here are ten fun facts:

  • In 1998 the band was founded by hollywood actor Jared Leto and his brother, Shannon.
  • A decision was made to name the band 30 Seconds to Mars after they read a thesis on the internet. A  section of the thesis was entitled “Thirty Seconds To Mars”. It discusses the exponential growth of human-related technology and says that we are virtually thirty seconds to Mars.
  • The band has released a total of four chart-topping albums: 30 Seconds to Mars, A Beautiful Lie, This is War and Love Lust Faith.
  • Jared Leto is not only the lead vocalist of the band, but the rhythm guitarist and main songwriter too.
  • Former 30 Seconds to Mars bassist Matt Wachter developed a concussion from frequent head-banging on stage.
  • A $30 million lawsuit was filed against the band in August 2008 by Virgin Records. The record company claimed the band refused to deliver three albums as required by its contract.
  • The band’s musical inspirations include The Cure, Metallica, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin.
  • The Music video for their song, “The Hurricane”, was banned from many popular Television stations due to mature content.
  • Jared Leto was born in Bossier City in Louisiana.
  • Their third single from A Beautiful Lie, “From Yesterday”, made history by being the first American rock video ever shot in China.
