Teen accused of killing her mom’s lover appears in court for bail

Teen who allegedly stabbed her mother’s lover to death on Sunday appears at the Gqeberha Magistrates court for a bail hearing.

The 18-year-old teen who allegedly stabbed her mother’s partner to death with a kitchen knife in Helenvale appeared in court on Wednesday.

Teenager appears in court

She was appearing for a bail application which has been postponed to Thursday, 20 April 2023.

Juanita Grootboom appeared briefly in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s court wearing a purple shirt and black pants.

She was  was arrested and charged with murder after she allegedly stabbed her mother’s lover to death during a heated argument on Sunday morning.

Teen murders Mom’s lover

The teenager was arrested on Sunday morning, 16 April 2023, and remanded in custody.

She allegedly stabbed her mother’s lover to death during a heated argument between the two.

The incident occurred at about 9.30am in Fitchard Street, Helenvale in Gqeberha.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said Jonathan Pretorius, 42, was embroiled in an argument with the mother when the teen intervened.

“The suspect intervened and allegedly stabbed Jonathan once in his chest. He succumbed to his injury at the scene.”

This happens at a time where there is a spiking level of crime in Gqeberha.

Crime experts and activists have noted that Gqeberha is amongst the crime level rated areas.

Amongst common crimes in the Eastern Cape are kidnapping for ransoms and murder.

After the teens incident, crime experts urge that everyone in the communities needs to play their part in fighting crime.

Further adding that Police need to get their act together, and communities need to blow the whistle on crime and become active citizens.
