A Golden Arrow bus driver in Cape Town was struck by a bullet on the N2 highway on Friday morning, 30 July. The incident took place near Borcherds Quarry – near the same spot a different driver was shot through the mouth – at approximately 7:00. Local police are investigating a case of attempted murder.

BUS DRIVER STRUCK BY BULLET MEANT FOR TAXI

According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, a bus driver sustained an ankle wound after being fired at from an unknown vehicle. No one else was injured in the shooting.

“Nyanga police opened an attempted murder case after a shooting incident this morning,” said van Wyk. “A bus driver was shot and sustained an injury to his ankle from an unknown vehicle.”

The unknown suspect, or suspects, fled the scene and are yet to be arrested, added van Wyk. He urged the public to provide any information that may assist the investigation.

Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, the spokesperson for the Golden Arrow Bus Service, said that preliminary reports suggest that the shooting incident was not a direct attack on the bus and that driver was merely at the wrong place at the wrong time.

“Both the reports and witnesses indicated that this was a stray bullet and was aimed at a taxi which had multiple shots fired at it,” said Dyke-Beyer. “As this was happening, our driver drove past and was struck by a stray bullet.”

Golden Arrow said the driver was treated for a “superficial” wound at the hospital.

The spokesperson said additional police and law enforcement visibility in the area has been requested.

More than 80 people have been killed in the Western Cape since the beginning of 2021 because of taxi industry-related violence with dozens of the killings happening within the last month.
