A taxi driver from Cape Town’s Hanover Park died from gunshot wounds to the head before his vehicle crashed into a bus on Thursday morning.

The incident in Govan Mbeki Road, Philippi, left two passengers injured.

THE TAXI DRIVER WAS GUNNED DOWN

According to a report by Daily Voice, taxi driver Tony Africa, also known as Tashreeq, had been driving along the Plain/Park route for decades. On Thursday morning, Africa allegedly stopped to pick up someone who seemed to be a passenger but turned out to be the gunman.

The shooter allegedly got inside the vehicle and shot and murdered the driver instantly. The shooter then stepped out and fled on foot. Africa lost control of the vehicle, which collided then with a bus.

MURDER CASE INVESTIGATED BY POLICE

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk told the media that a murder case would be investigated.

“The taxi driver died of a gunshot wound to the head and two of his passengers were injured as a result of the impact of the collision. They were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

SANTACO WAS SADDENED BY THE INCIDENT

The SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) spokesperson Makhosandile Tumana said the incident is a sad development.

“As the association we are saddened about what had happened. We wish for a speed recovery to those injured passengers and condolences to the driver’s family and friends. We live in a world full of crime and it is unfortunate that as the association we lost one of our drivers. To crime intelligence, we appeal to them to find whoever is responsible for this.”

VIOLENCE IN CAPE TOWN

There have been reports of taxi-related violence in Cape Town. Two weeks ago a female member of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) allegedly died in a meeting.
