The harrowing moment a taxi smashed through the storefront of a Khayelitsha Engen was captured by CCTV, and it doesn’t make for easy viewing.

As reported by the Daily Voice, Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.

Earlier reports suggested that the driver of the taxi was drunk. However, these concerns were dismissed by the store manager Michael Davids, who told the publication:

“From what we know, the driver was not drunk. He had filled up on the tanks and when he restarted his van, there was some sort of malfunction. The accelerator and the clutch were damaged and he just went flying through the shop.”

What we know about the crash

The footage went viral on social media, with many users scrambling for answers on what lead to such a dramatic incident. The “Ubuntu Convenience” garage itself is located near Mandela Park, just down the road from Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court. It’s also just a few minutes away from Baden Powell Drive and the N2.

The incident took place at 20:00 on Saturday night. As shoppers inside the Quick Stop went about their business, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. People near the entrance soon begin to panic, and before many could react, the vehicle ploughs through the glass windows.

At least three particularly unfortunate customers crashed off the bonnet, as the motor eventually came to a halt. The damage to the store is beyond extensive and the facility remains closed on Monday. Remarkably, no deaths have been reported and only two people have been injured.

We are still awaiting feedback from the Western Cape Traffic Department, who have yet to respond to our calls or emails on this matter.
