The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) announced that its cable car operations would grind to a halt for five weeks at the end of July to allow maintenance on the tourist attraction’s upper and lower stations and cabins.

TABLE MOUNTAIN CABLEWAY TO CLOSE FOR FIVE WEEKS

The maintenance process this year is extensive and complex, said TMACC and the five-week shutdown is necessary because the scheduled maintenance cannot be carried out between normal operations.

TMACC Managing Director Wahida Parker said industry safety standards required a more comprehensive closure in 2022 to ensure the required work is done properly.

All cable car operations will be suspended for between 25 July and 28 August. However, food and beverage sales at the lower station are expected to continue.

“The focus for this year will be on the track-ropes which carry the majority of the weight of the cablecars, along with the brackets from which the cabins are suspended, and the hydraulic braking system situated at the Lower Station,” said Emile Streicher, the Executive Manager of Technical at the company.

“Servicing is done according to a service schedule which is time, usage, and condition-based. Many of the specified service intervals are more than six years and servicing tasks usually differ from year to year,” he added.

Hikers will still be allowed to make their way up and down Table Mountain by foot.
