Four dead, eight wounded in Pietermaritzburg tavern shooting

According to police, a vehicle parked outside a tavern in Pietermaritzburg, two males got out and fired random shots at patrons killing 4.

Four people have been shot dead while eight others were wounded during a shooting incident at a tavern in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. 

The incident reportedly happened on Saturday night at 20:30 while a group of people were having drinks. 

FOUR KILLED IN PIETERMARITZBURG TAVERN 

According to police, a vehicle arrived and parked outside the tavern. Two males jumped out of the vehicle and fired random shots at the patrons when they entered the tavern. 

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala Nqobile Gwala said  a total of twelve people were shot; two people were declared dead at the scene while two others reportedly died in hospital. 

“Another eight people are still in hospital after they sustained injuries. The suspects fled the scene after the incident. The deceased are aged between 30 and 45.

“Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation at Plessislaer SAPS. The docket has been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit who will take over the investigation.”

MOTIVE UNKNOWN IN SOWETO SHOOTING

Police have launched a manhunt after fourteen people were shot and killed at a tavern in Nomzamo informal settlement in Orlando East, Soweto.

According to police, a group of men armed with rifles and 9mm pistols entered a tavern and started shooting randomly at the patrons who were sitting inside.

Twenty three people were shot, twelve of whom were declared dead on the scene while eleven others were rushed to hospital. Two more were later were later declared deceased at the hospital.

Spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Sello said police have opened fourteen cases of murder and nine of attempted murder.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects is urged to report on the crime stop hotline or by giving a tip off on the MySAPS app. All information received will be treated as strictly confidential,” Sello said.
