Police Minister, Bheki Cele has confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the mass shooting of ten family members at Imbali Unit 14 in Pietermaritzburg.

Cele and Police Commissioner, General Fanie Masemola visited the crime scene on Friday, 21 April.

SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN PIETERMARITZBURG MASS SHOOTING

Speaking to the media, Cele said they received information that there were people who were doing a cleansing not far from the crime scene. When police pounced on them the suspects fired shots and police retaliated.

Two suspects of which one was injured have been arrested, another suspect was fatally wounded while the fourth one managed to run away.

“It seems like the suspect who died is thee guy, he is linked to many crime scenes especially murders around here. He is known to have been a really notorious guy in Pietermaritzburg, Inanda and Durban,” Cele said.

Cele said three firearms were recovered and also hailed police for responding quickly and apprehending the suspects.

As previously reported, South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal Brigadier Jay Naicker said initial reports indicate that unknown gunmen stormed a Pietermaritzburg homestead and ambushed the family.

Ten family members; seven women and three men were fatally wounded during the shooting.
