A suspected blue lights gang member was arrested this week after an observant high-ranking police officer and his junior stopped a vehicle fitted with blue lights in Gauteng.

OBSERVANT SENIOR OFFICER CATCH SUSPECTED BLUE LIGHTS GANG MEMBER

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said excellent power of observation by the police Major General and a Constable led to the arrest of the suspected blue light robber who had a fake police appointment certificate (identity card).

According to Masondo, West Rand District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, observed an illegal activity as he was driving with a police constable on Thursday, 13 October 2022.

“While on R28 in Krugersdorp, at approximately 18:35, they noticed a suspicious unmarked VW Polo fitted with blue lights.”

POLICE QUESTION MAN ABOUT HIS APPOINTMENT

He said the duo immediately stopped the car, and the driver who was questioned alleged that he was a police officer and produced what looked like a police identity card.

“Upon further questioning by the Major General, it became clear that the man is not a police officer and he did not have authority to drive a car fitted with blue lights. The suspect was found in possession of a bulletproof vest written by police and a licensed firearm,” Masando explained.

COURT APPEARANCE COMING UP FOR SUSPECT

He further explained that the blue light gang member is expected to appear before Krugersdorp Magistrates Court, facing a charge of impersonating a police officer and possession of blue light without authority.

Meanwhile last month, a blue light gang was arrested by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) after following their instinct.

EMPD noticed a suspicious vehicle parked under the bridge on the R21 North.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that the registration plate fitted did not match the vehicle the blue light gang was in.
