The Gauteng Hawks arrested several suspects who allegedly attempted to rob a Lenasia businessman on Tuesday, 31 May, after receiving a tip-off.

HAWKS STOP ROBBERY

The Hawks’ Tactical Operational Management Section was joined by Gauteng Traffic’s Saturation Unit and Vaal Rand Serious Organised Crime Investigation during the multidisciplinary operation.

The unit followed up on information from Crime Intelligence and monitored the suspects right before they executed the robbery.

The suspects spotted the authorities and fled the scene in a vehicle. At the same time, two suspects remained on the victim’s property.

The suspects in the house opened fire on the law enforcement unit and members returned fire fatally wounding one suspect.

“During the high-speed chase the suspects’ vehicle collided with a truck, resulting in the chasing vehicle swerving to avoid the truck but collided with another vehicle,” said Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale.

Three suspects were injured in the crash. From the wreckage, they were arrested while a member of the multidisciplinary unit was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Mogale said the vehicle used by the alleged robbers was using false number plates. Three unlicensed firearms were also found at the scene.

The suspects – aged between 25 and 45 – are expected to appear before the Lenasia on charges of murder, attempted murder, house robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
