The Eastern Cape girl was repeatedly raped by her stepfather, and at the age of 12, she fell pregnant and gave birth to a son.
A 38-year-old stepfather from the Eastern Cape was found guilty on three counts of rape and sentenced to double life imprisonment. The sentences will run concurrently.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the man appeared in the Gqeberha High Court on Friday.
Naidu said the girl was repeatedly raped between the age of 8 and 12 years old by her stepfather.
“When she was 12 years old, she fell pregnant and gave birth to a son. After the death of her mother, she went to live with relatives in East London.”
In 2019, the girl reported the incident to her aunt, who in turn reported the incident to the police. Her son was then five years old.

“In October 2020, the stepfather and charged and appeared in court on three counts of rape.”
“The stepfather was subsequently released on R1000 bail.
“On Wednesday, 25 August 2021, he was found guilty on three counts of rape and was remanded in custody.”
Naidu said the stepfather was sentenced to one life imprisonment for counts 1 and 2- rape and second life imprisonment for counts 3- rape. The sentences will run concurrently.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Brig Thandiswa Kupiso said sexual violence does not only violates human rights but also leaves deep psychological and emotional scars on the victims.

“It is very disturbing when perpetrators are the ones that are close to the victims and are trusted by them. Rape is a crime that mainly happens behind closed doors and out of the public eye therefore the SAPS urges victims to immediately report such humiliating acts of degradation so that perpetrators are arrested and justice gained for the victims.”
