Authorities in Stellenbosch have confirmed that “illegal road closures” are taking place across the town. It’s understood that a taxi strike – organised by a few rogue elements in the industry – are taking their grievances to the streets, blocking traffic and bringing the CBD to a standstill.

Why are taxi drivers striking in Stellies?

Taxi operators are protesting against municipal traffic officials, who have stepped up their bid to enforce the law by having taxis with outstanding fines and warrants pulled over.

According to the local municipality, traffic officers are at the scene trying to disperse of the unlawful gathering. They have told residents to avoid the CBD “if at all possible”. Stellies officials Tweeted about the situation on Tuesday morning, confirming that commuters had been badly impacted by the chaos:

“Roads closed in parts of the Stellenbosch CBD as Traffic and Law Enforcement Officers are dealing with illegal road closures. Please avoid the area if at all possible. Roads have also been closed around the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court. “

As always with these situations, the hefty build-up of traffic has lead to a number of road closures across the CBD. Stellenbosch is effectively gridlocked at the moment, with the following routes currently off-limits for drivers:

  • The R44 into Stellenbosch has been closed to traffic.
  • Blockade on the corner of Bird and Merriman Street.
  • Alexander Street has also seen a number of taxis close the roads off.
