It will probably be the most-watched testimony of the commission of inquiry into state capture. Finance Minister, Nhlanhla Nene is expected to appear at the inquiry this week.

The one question that will ring loud in the ears of many observers will be centered around the controversial nuclear deal that allegedly got him fired from his position.

The critical talking point in Nhlanhla Nene state capture testimony

You will remember that at the latter parts of 2015, former president Jacob Zuma was allegedly trying hard to push through a massive nuclear deal that would have cost the taxpayer R1.6-trillion.

Nene’s refusal of seeing the deal through cost him his job and that is the sentiment that many political analysts and insiders have shared for the last three years.

We will, for the first time, get the comprehensive point of view of the man who stood at the center of Zuma’s most costly mistake: hiring Dez van Rooyen shortly after removing Nene.

The critical part of Nene’s testimony will be in how he links the nuclear deal with its alleged benefactors, Russia’s Rosatom as well as the Gupta-owned Shiva Uranium.

Cyril Ramaphosa may be one of the many talking points after Nene’s testimony

Furthermore, Times Live reported that

evidence to come before the commission in the next few weeks will also reveal that Joemat-Pettersson made the same presentation to the ANC’s top six officials the day before Nene’s firing. This means that the ANC’s top brass, including Cyril Ramaphosa, then deputy president, did not oppose the nuclear deal.

The fact that President Cyril Ramaphosa did not actively work against the signing off of the nuclear deal will most definitely be one of the key take-outs that will be unpacked further.

Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan will also have his day at Deputy Chief Justice Zondo’s commission some time next week.
